2009 Was a Good Year for Data Centers
01.06.10 | Comments Off

The stock market started its upward trend again and a lot of industry sectors managed to regain their foothold. But only a handful of sectors bounced higher and more impressively than the data centers. The share prices of a number of key players in this sector have finished with significant three-digit gains over the past year, easily outperforming a lot of indices.
When 2008 closed, share prices of various providers had taken the toll of the economic downturn due to credit worries and issues on the capital-intensive nature of data centers. But many companies still continued on investing in this mission-critical infrastructure so that the major players in the industry still managed to expand in spite of the credit crunch.
A lot of data center and managed hosting companies tracked have managed to gain as much as 53 percent or even better during the previous year. Leading the pack of winners is DuPont Fabros Technology, a real estate investment trust that focuses on data centers. The company’s shares experienced a resounding hit during last part of 2009 when it stopped its data center construction project. But DuPont Fabros managed to get back in the game by putting together financing for the completion of facilities in New Jersey and Virginia which in turn boosted strong leasing demand for its northern Virginia core market.
Hosting providers such as Rackspace Hosting, NaviSite and Switch and Data have also experienced triple digit gains. NaviSite was able to bounce back from its liquidity concerns from early 2009. Switch and Data, on the other hand, has improved its pending $700 million Equinix acquisition.

T-Mobile and Orange Not Ready to Give up Their Broadband Spectrum
12.14.09 | Comments Off

Service providers T-Mobile and Orange both hold quite a large share of broadband spectrum in the UK market. Now that both the companies are merging, rumours are ripe that they will probably be giving up some of their spectrum. However, both the companies have denied any plans to do so, though their combined ownership will create a massive 170MHz of broadcast spectrum, which is quite enormous as compared to Vodafone’s 76MHz and 3’s 15MHz.

The proposed merger was declared in September of this year by Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom, the parent companies of T-Mobile and Orange respectively. The regulatory approvals have not been received yet, and many have believed since the declaration that Ofcom may ask the companies to give up some of its spectrum allocation before approving the merger. Ofcom did so, but it seems the companies are not willing to listen to the regulatory body.

In addition to a large share of the spectrum, the new company will have a large share of the market as well. Both the entities combined will cover more than 35% of the broadband market in the UK. It will give the merging companies a lot of control over the market, if considered in association with the broadband spectrum they already control.

Mobile Broadband is Not Advertising Friendly, Say Industry Experts
11.30.09 | Comments Off

Mobile broadband usage has hit the roof in recent months with prediction from experts saying that the usage will still soar further in coming years. Demand is expected to skyrocket in this industry, with analysts claiming that the use will grow forty fold by year 2017.

The prediction for immense expansion is consistent and with current growth figures. In fact, experts believe that soon the demand for mobile broadband will overwhelm the existing infrastructure, and technology will be hard pressed to catch up with this exponential growth.

Given this expectation for growth of a media that has the potential to reach millions across the globe, it is but natural that this medium will be the next target for advertisements. The universal nature and ability of this medium to touch the lives of millions of all ages and boundaries makes it an ideal platform for advertising in any form. Mobile broadband providers have in fact tested the waters by beaming advertisements that can be seen when customers log on.

However, the startling revelation so far is that broadband does not appear to be an effective and profitable medium for advertising. Analysts have found a huge discrepancy between expected returns and actual return from adverts online. This dissatisfying finding has been confirmed by the managing partner of agenda21 digital at the Westminster eForum Keynote Seminar.

There are a number of points to consider when choosing the mobile broadband. If you choose to look for laptop deals through Mobile Broadband Genie, you will be given all the information you need about each supplier on their comparative table of UK broadband providers to help guide you through the decision process.

Broadband and Related Technologies Confuse Brits
05.12.09 | Comments Off

Virgin Media recently conducted a survey among 3000 internet users in Britain to find out the level of digital awareness among them. The survey tried to do this by testing their knowledge on internet technology and terminology and other related subjects.

The results for the survey have turned out to be surprisingly poor. Keeping in mind that we all live in a society where internet plays a significant role, the results should have shown that we are reasonably digitally literate. However, that was not the case. 7% people said that Blu-Ray was a type of broadband service. More than 50% people said that they were unaware of the speed of their broadband connection. It seems that most of the consumers do not know much about their download limits, terms and conditions, and internet security as well.

From the broadband perspective, the most shocking result came up when more than 50% said that a phone-line was mandatory for getting a broadband connection. Besides that, 45% people did not know what a dongle is (click for info on wireless dongle), which must be a worrying fact for mobile broadband companies. Despite the pervasive use of such technologies, people are not educated enough about them, and this would irk the government too.

Richard Branson of Virgin Media has therefore made up his mind to start ‘broadband schools‘ all over the country. Initially, they could come up in areas such as Leeds and Birmingham, which have been found to be least digitally literate. Branson himself claimed not to be a digitally accomplished person and stated that he may also be joining such a school.

55 Percent of Brits Not Interested in Broadband
03.27.09 | Comments Off

In a recent talk at the London School of Economics, Ofcom Chief Executive Ed Richards has revealed that more than half of Britons are quite uninterested in getting themselves a broadband internet connection.

Ofcom’s data shows that 55% of British people show no interest in broadband - not even in the most basic connectivity. A worrying 40% of Britons, in fact, currently have no connection to the internet at home. Richards says that the greatest challenge is the provision of broadband internet to low-income families, and that it is necessary to find out the reasons behind the low popularity of broadband in Britain. (for info on cheap broadband options, click here).

Richards also stated that millions of people are yet to be convinced of the efficacy of broadband, although they are being constantly prompted with information on its utility - from downloading one’s favourite shows and football games to finding cheap insurance and online banking.

Cost still remains a hurdle as out of those who refuse a broadband connection, 30% do so to avoid paying another monthly bill, while 15% feel that though the bill is worth paying, they do not have a computer that would allow them to use the Internet.

In his speech, Richards also commented on the plans to introduce connections with 2Mbps minimum speed, saying that improvements over existing infrastructure instead of waiting for a completely new network is probably a better solution for the households still without a connection.
