Convertible Car Seats, Children’s Car Seats and Rear Facing Seats — a Primer
11.29.09 | Comments Off

Purchasing the fittest child car seat relies on a better understanding of the field than is typical, as between the different brands, styles and the safety regulations, the choice really can matter. We’ll help by breaking down, piece by piece, what you need to know to make it easier. The standard has been set by respected brands (Safety 1st, Graco, et cetera) and consists of a multitude of products intended for babies of under 12 months — capable of carrying a total capacity of around 20 pounds. A few chairs are capable of being turned forward, though the majority are entirely designed to be used facing the rear — something to remember when buying. Several of the best of these chairs are designed to double as baby carriers, making it less problematic to move from car to house without your baby waking.

If you want a car chair your child won’t grow out of, you’re looking for a convertible. These will fit your son from their first car trip to the point where they outgrow safety chairs entirely, though these seats cost more than others. As any review can point out, by and large chairs like these are less easy to carry out of the car.

An understanding of each model’s key features can be obtained from the assorted reviews, ensuring that you choose not only the best chair but the best for your little one. Make your choice confidently, knowing most available reviews are third party pieces. Booster chairs are designed specifically for children weighing between around thirty pounds all the way up to eighty pounds. Be it the use of the car’s own safety belt or the five-point harness— booster seats secure using one of two methods and either may be more comfortable for your little one, so the sensible thing to do is to determine how it feels before your purchase. Toys are often an integral part of seats like these, helping to keep your little one quieter and occupied while you get on with driving.

Finding the best safety chairs can be a long process, with the need to weigh your son’s needs against your finances. The savvy parent won’t neglect ratings and reviews — they are beyond doubt the very best information resource out there.

Safety First, when it Comes to a Baby Travel System
10.16.09 | Comments Off

With a wide range of options available in baby transport systems, parents find it difficult to pick and choose the stroller which fits their needs perfectly. However, even if you succeed in buying the right one, it does not automatically guarantee that your baby will remain safe while travelling. You need to put in some extra effort to ensure that the buggy you choose is completely user friendly and risk free.

Regular maintenance can ensure that your baby will stay safe while travelling. There are many factors to look at while carrying out a routine maintenance check. Most important is the stability or balance of the carriage. Your baby will not remain absolutely still as you push them along. He/she will tend to move around and try to catch sight of all the colours and things around him/her. A stable carriage will allow your baby the freedom of movement without tipping over sideways.

When you are assessing buggies, make sure it is a wide one with wheels behind the baby to maximise its stability. Making sure the wheels have the right pressure will also ensure a safe and jerk-free ride.

You should also check that there are brakes on both wheels and not just one. Check for adequate number of safety harnesses and safety latches. When you are using it, make sure that your baby is positioned properly and that the seat belts, latches and harnesses are in place and ready to use. If you are likely to put your bags on the stroller, make sure the basket or tray is at the bottom of the carriage, where it will add to the stability.

Essential Facts about Baby Pushchairs
10.05.09 | Comments Off

The most common forms of baby pushchairs are the buggy pushchairs for a single baby and also the twin or double pushchairs for two babies, these comes in a side-by-side and a tandem configuration. In recent years, because of an increase in the number of multiple births like triplets, triple pushchairs also arrived onto the scene.

The main difference between these two terms of description is due to geographic and possibly cultural influences. The term “stroller” is generally used in the US whereas in the UK, the term “pushchair” is used, especially between its invention and during the 1980s.

In American English though, the term “buggy” is actually synonymous with baby “carriages” and “prams”, which transports infants in the lying position, usually for newborns. Be it a “stroller’, “pushchair” or “buggy”, this form of transport has the child (generally up to three years old) sitting rather than lying down and usually in a forward facing direction, instead of facing the person doing the pushing. In this article, for simplicity purpose, we will be using the term “pushchair” for description. Pushchairs come in many different forms and configurations, different models provides different degrees of adjustment for reclining, some may be suitable for newborns while most baby pushchairs are more appropriate for older babies who are already able to sit upright.

Buggy pushchairs are forward facing pushchairs and are usually heavier than the standard pushchair and easily maneuverable. It comes in hundreds of varieties, differing in brands, models, features and of course pricing. Folding these buggy pushchairs is a breeze and they are easy to store and kept away when not in use.

Seats of these pushchairs are heavily padded for comfort and protection and are usually adjustable with a number of reclining positions, however most cannot be brought to a complete horizontal lying position although some models do provide the ability to convert into a fully recline pushchair for newborn babies.

In addition, you may want to get one with a large storage area beneath the pushchair to store your baby’s items as well as for some light shopping. Buggy pushchairs are the most popular as well as the most commonly found pushchairs in the market due to their flexibility and ease of use and storage.

Graduation Gown

The graduation gown makes up part of the official graduating dress code and is currently used by tertiary and secondary institutions of learning. The long draping garment is worn above other clothes and may be black or any color that is in accordance to the institution’s official colors. The graduation gown is accompanied with a separate hood that hangs at the back as well as a headpiece known as the graduation cap or mortarboard. The gown has always been held as a symbol of distinction and in ancient student institutions students were required to be draped in gowns during lessons as a sign of academic excellence.

Graduation gowns are basically similar in most countries with only minor differences in appearance. The graduation gown is usually pleated at the front and also comes with material at the rear that is held together with a yoke. The more conventional designs today use a curved yoke while before a straight yoke was preferred to hold together material. The graduation gown worn by undergraduate students usually has wide sleeves that have a bell shape while the masters students wear gowns with long sleeves, which have a slit near the elbow area where the hand can pass through.

Infertility-Fertility: Why Can’t I Have A Baby?

Category: Kiddie Stuff

Why can’t I have a baby? That was a question I used to ask myself all the time. When you want a baby so badly, it seems that every other woman in the world just has to blink her eyes and presto! She’s pregnant. You’re left marinating in your own thoughts of failure, unworthiness, and not deserving to have what you consider to be the most rewarding and joyful experience of your life.

I spent 6 years trying to have a baby. It goes without saying, that’s a long time! But during those 6 years I learned a lot about myself and about the way I attract what I want in my life. Initially, my husband and I decided to pursue fertility treatments. We tried medications, inseminations, and IVF twice. The medications and inseminations didn’t work at all, and the IVF’s ended in miscarriage and the removal of one of my fallopian tubes. We decided to discontinue our fertility treatments because we had spent about $25,000 and wound up worse off than when we started. But, after doing much research, I realized that even though I was over 40, I still could get pregnant. Just because my fertility treatments failed, it didn’t mean that I couldn’t have a baby, it just meant that the ‘high tech’ route was not the answer. Afterall, I had always been an advocate of ‘clean living’ — I rarely took medications, and I’ve always been one that enjoyed an ‘all natural’ lifestyle. It should have been no surprise that fertility treatments didn’t work. All the drugs and hormones associated with fertility treatments basically bombarded my system with what I now consider to be toxic chemicals. Is that anyway to try to bring a child into the world? Not for me.

Now, just for the record, let me say that some women do need fertility treatments depending on their diagnosis. For instance, if your tubes are totally blocked, the only way to get around that is IVF. But for many people who fall into the ‘unexplained category’, fertility treatments may not be the answer. After much research, I developed a ‘pregnancy protocol’ which resulted in 4 pregnancies over the age of 40! Once I started getting pregnant, my problem became miscarriage, not infertility. The first 3 naturally conceived pregnancies ended in miscarriage, but as I refined my protocol and as I got healthier and more hormonally balanced, I finally carried my last pregnancy to term without complications. I was 44 when I had my beautiful daughter.

One piece of my pregnancy protocol was changing what I call my ‘pregnancy mindset”. When you’re struggling with infertility or miscarriage, you start to believe that a successful pregnancy is impossible and you fall into the “why me?” trap.
You become a victim of infertility and “victimhood” is very disempowering. Instead you need to change your thoughts to thoughts of success. Instead of saying “I can’t have a baby”, you need to be happy and joyful that your baby is on the way. You need to open your heart and your mind and tell yourself that your baby will come when the time is right. The problem is that when you’re so far down, it’s hard to climb out. It’s hard to get your hopes up only to deal with the constant disappointment of either not getting pregnant, or miscarrying.

If you were a new soul ready to make your journey into the world (or in this case - into the womb), wouldn’t you prefer to come into an environment that was calm, peaceful and receptive? When you’re struggling with infertility, you’re usually in a place of anger, disappointment, jealousy, and frustration. Is this the environment you would choose? Honestly, I think that’s one reason that some couples get pregnant after giving up their dreams of having a family or after deciding to adopt. They finally let go of their ill feelings and move into acceptance. They quit trying to force things in to place which makes room for success. Believe me, you can’t force babies into anything. They will do things in their own time, on their own schedule.

One technique I used for changing my mindset was visualization. I would picture my baby in my mind. I would hold her, I would play with her, and I could feel the love for her deep down in my soul. My visualizations were so strong that I would find myself smiling without even knowing it! When you have such loving thoughts, your mindset is automatically lifted and this becomes your point of attraction. Alternately, when you’re feeling angry and deprived, your point of attraction is heartache and pain and this is what you manifest in your life. I brought myself to a place where in my mind I already had a baby. If I saw other pregnant women, instead of being jealous, I would look at them and think, they have such a miracle inside of them, just like me. I planned out my maternity wardrobe, I planned my nursery, it was a done deal. When you’re in the right mindset it’s easy to succeed. It becomes hard to fail!

Don’t be afraid to picture success. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re going to set yourself up for disappointment. These thoughts may be keeping you from the very thing you want so much. You can create what you want in your life whether it’s having a baby, or anything else. If you go back and examine your past, think of all the things you’ve achieved. Can you see how you manifested them? Take credit! It was no accident. Your point of attraction was success.

Think Like Your Kids - And Understand Them More!

Category: Kiddie Stuff

Seven-year old Michael was on a school trip to a Wildlife
Centre in Central Scotland. It was near the end of the day
and they were in the Gift Shop before boarding the bus for
the journey home.

Poor Michael! He couldn’t resist the array of lollipops and
chocolate animals that beckoned to him. He chose one and was
about to pay for it with his last few pennies.

His teacher, a kindly soul with not long before retirement,
noticed him. “Have you bought something for your Mum yet,
Michael?”

Michael lowered his head in shame! Gently, the teacher took
the candy bar from him and replaced it on the shelf.

She walked to another display and selected a small figure
made from cheap plastic. “Why not take this for her? You’ve
got just enough money left.”

Years have now passed.

Michael is all grown up and has left home, but the
figurine still
has pride of place in his mum’s display cabinet.

Michael still recalls the day he learned an important
lesson:
“The figure was made of cheap plastic, but my Mum couldn’t
have
treasured it more had it been made of silver, gold or even
platinum.”

Sometimes we as parents and adults lose our sense of
perspective, don’t we? What may seem trivial and
unimportant
to us, can mean so much to a child.

We can learn a useful parenting tip from Michael’s mum.
The gift had little or no monetary value, but was given
- albeit with a gentle nudge from the teacher! - with
generosity and a certain amount of personal sacrifice.
And by displaying it for years, Michael’s mum showed her
appreciation of that.

This reminds me of a conference I once attended.

There was a blue rug on the floor and the participants were
asked to gather round. It was an exercise in perception,
we were
told.

The speaker threw a small woollen ball onto the rug.
It was exactly the same colour and was made from the same
material - so it blended in and seemed to disappear.

‘Now find it,’ was the instruction. Everyone peered and
peered without success, until someone - not me! - got down
on his knees and looked from ground level.

Bingo! There was the profile of the ball, rising above the
surface of the mat.

Call it ‘thinking outside the box’ or whatever - but very
often problems can be solved by looking at them from another
perspective or dimension.

When we learn to think like our children, when we ‘get
down to their level’, when we master the art of getting
inside their heads and seeing life from their point of view,
the task of raising children becomes much easier - to say
nothing of more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Happy parenting!

Vaginal Bleeding During Pregnancy: What’s Normal, What’s Not
05.14.08 | Comments Off
Category: Kiddie Stuff

Q. What are some causes of normal vaginal bleeding during pregnancy?

A. There are a few normal reasons for vaginal bleeding.

* Implantation of your fertilized egg causes slight spotting in a minority of woman. If it happens, it will be near the time you would normally have your period. This bleeding should be very light spotting and last for a day or two. [Spotting: very light bleeding similar to the end of your period.]

* Cervix is more prone to bleed as blood flow is naturally increased during pregnancy. That said, anything that may touch or irritate the cervix can cause bleeding. Sex, gynecological exam, pap smear, physical work, exercise. This bleeding should only spot and last for a day or two.

* If you notice spotting after exercising or working, ease off a bit and see if the spotting stops. Keep a log of your workouts and spotting frequency. This way you know how much you can work or exercise.

* If you are spotting for more than two days, or see an increase in the amount, or do not see a cause of the bleeding, contact your health provider.

* At around 37 weeks, a mucous plug may come out tinged with blood. This is an early sign of labor.

Q. What are some causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding during pregnancy?

A. As the cervix is more engorged, STD’s or any type of vaginal infection may cause bleeding. Infections irritate the cervix causing bleeding or spotting for more than a day or two. Bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, Chlamydia, Herpes are some common infections that may cause prolonged bleeding. See your health provider. They will do a pap or wet mount slide prep to see if an infection is present and treat accordingly.

Spontaneous abortion is a cause of abnormal bleeding. Of the 10% to 25% of women who report spotting during the 1st trimester, 20% to 50% of those will spontaneously abort. If you cannot pin-point a cause of the spotting or it progresses, see your health provider.

Pain with spotting may indicate an ectopic pregnancy or early signs of miscarriage. Pain and spotting is not normal. An ectopic pregnancy must be terminated for the woman’s safety. Ultrasound can confirm or rule out an ectopic pregnancy. This occurs in the first trimester and occurs in 1.5% of all pregnancies.

Abnormal bleeding in pregnancy may indicate placenta problems (eg. placenta previa during any trimester which presents as painless bleeding) or premature labor. Again, if bleeding is more than spotting, increasing in amount or duration, call your health provider.

Q. What is too much bleeding?

A. Duration or quantity are the keys here. If spotting is happening for more than two days and you cannot pin-point a normal cause, contact your health provider.

If bleeding is increasing beyond spotting, it is necessary to contact your health provider. There does not have to be pain associated. If painless bleeding is present, do contact your provider.

If you think it is too much bleeding and you need reassurance, call. Relaxation is very important for a healthy mom and baby. One cannot relax when unsure. Don’t be tough. Call. Your health provider is there to assist and educate you during this amazing time.

GOOD NEWS! ;)
An ultrasound that shows a heartbeat between 7 - 11 weeks, the chances of continuing the pregnancy are better than 90%

4d baby scans - baby ultrasound company
04.14.08 | Comments Off

The method know as three dimensional ultrasound scanning is that can be used during early pregnancy, it provides 3d images of the unborn baby. Most of the time these pictures are rapidly captured and joined together to produce a 4d ultrasound scan.

Three dimensional scanning works in a similar way to the normal scanning methods except that the ultrasound scanning pulses can be sent from multiple directions. The ultrasound pulses can be redirected back then captured to provide information to construct a 3-dimensional image in in a similar manner to 3d movies. 3d ultrasound was devised by stephen smith and olaf von ramm.

It’s important to understand that sonologists worldwide have always pictured 3d pictures of the body in their minds while carrying out 2d scans. However, until recently it was impossible to do this kind of reconstruction on on data using ultrasound. With the introduction of 4d baby scans for the first time allowed us a view into the thinking of a sonologist and so allowing us see the images on the ultrasound machine.

3d/4d imaging should utilize ultrasound energy following the same limits as conventional 2d ultrasound to create the 3d images. While there is no information of harm due to 3d ultrasound, its use in non-medical situations needs to be undertaken with an understanding of the risks involved.
